Labour Of Love
In the summer of 2017, I worked with ‘the initiative’ - an organisation providing sustainable livelihoods to craftspeople of India. We worked with the craft of 'Godhadis' - hand quilted blankets native to the state of Maharashtra. In the process, the organisation trained and employed motivated women seeking economic independence. This series of sketches was created to share the laborious process of making a 'Godhadi' with the buyers.
'Meet our Makers and their magic hands. These hands are often coarse, wrinkled and might not even possess the graceful lines of a fine hand but they are honest. That's because our makers work with their hands and their hearts. Yes, this is where a little bit of magic gets woven into our products, and quite effortlessly so. They sew together each piece with a simple white thread, after a thoughtful selection from a variety of cloth pieces.' - The Initiative
